What is a PD Measurement?
A PD measurement or pupillary distance is one of four basic measurements used in unison with your eyeglasses prescription. The PD measurements aligns the clearest portion of your lenses horizontally in front of your pupils similar to the Y plane on a graph. The other measurements align the lenses on a vertical plane or Y axis, distance or Z axis, and the angle or tilt of the lenses.

What are progessive lenses?
Progressive lenses improve the quality of life of a patient by allowing them to see at all distances. This is in comparison to a “Single Vision” lens which will correct for either distance, computer, or reading. Progressive lenses eliminate the need to have 2 or 3 pairs of eyeglasses and switching between each pair on a regular basis.
Why can I not see out of my progressive lenses?
- Proper fitting of Progressive is even more crucial than the measurements taken for single vision lenses. Small errors in styling and lens placement can result in improper placement of the sweet spots or “Optical Centers”. Vision through a progressive lens is similar to the shape of an hour glass. The top portion of the hour glass where the sands drains from is the distance portion, the tight funnel in the middle is the computer or mid section, and the bottom portion of the hour glass is for reading. Everything outside of this hourglass shape is distorted and not very usable space.
- A few tips to using your progressive lenses:
o Understand how the lenses work and the 3 main sections: Distance, Mid, & Near Vision.
o “Follow your nose!” Point your nose at what you are looking at and your eyes should stay within the sweet spots of the lenses.
o Be mindful of your eye and head movement, the portion of the lens you are looking through affects the magnification power of the lens and in turn affects the clarity of the object you are looking at.
